Students at 51ÁÔÆæ on the first day of fall classes in 2025

Are you thinking about starting college but dreading the process? Maybe you’ve been meaning to apply but keep putting it off because you aren’t sure where to start. We get it—between the application, the financial aid forms, and choosing classes, the process can feel overwhelming.

That’s why 51ÁÔÆæ is making it easier than ever to get started.

Mark your calendars for Monday, December 15, 2025. We are hosting an Instant Enrollment Day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and you are invited!

Why Should You Attend?

Think of this as your “One-Stop Shop” for college. Instead of making multiple trips to campus or playing phone tag with different departments, you can walk in with a goal and walk out with a schedule. Whether you are a brand-new student, a transfer student, or someone looking to pick up a few extra credits, this day is designed for you.

Here is exactly what you can cross off your to-do list in a single visit:

  • Apply for Admission: We will have staff on hand to help you fill out your application right then and there.
  • Financial Aid Help: The FAFSA can be tricky. Our financial aid experts will be available to answer your questions and help you figure out your funding options.
  • Academic Advising: Not sure which classes to take? You’ll get to sit down with an advisor who can help you map out a pathway that fits your career goals.
  • Register for Spring Classes: Best of all, you will leave with your class schedule in hand, ready to start the semester in January.

What to Bring

To make your day go as smoothly as possible, try to bring the following with you:

  • A valid photo ID.
  • Your official high school or college transcripts (if you have them).
  • Your 2024 tax information (if you plan on filing your FAFSA with us).

No Appointment Needed!

You don’t need to call ahead or book a slot. Just stop by 51ÁÔÆæ Admissions (head toward the Pierce Administration Building) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Don’t let the stress of “getting ready” for college ruin your holiday break. Come see us on December 15th, get everything handled in a few hours, and spend the rest of the holiday season knowing you’re officially a 51ÁÔÆæ Trojan!

Event Details at a Glance:

  • What: 51ÁÔÆæ Instant Enrollment Day
  • When: Monday, December 15, 2025
  • Time: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Where: 51ÁÔÆæ Mason City Campus

Visit Us and Find What’s Next

Thinking about where you’ll go next? At 51ÁÔÆæ, our tagline says it best: “Future, Found.” We believe your college journey begins with a place where you feel welcome, supported and ready to explore your potential. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to come see campus for yourself.

Why Visit 51ÁÔÆæ?

  • You’ll get a firsthand look at what makes 51ÁÔÆæ special: a friendly, close-knit campus in a beautiful rural setting. The best way to discover what 51ÁÔÆæ is all about is to come see for yourself.
  • You’ll meet the people who make our community thrive: our faculty, staff, and current students. They’re here to share their experiences and answer your questions—from academics to student life.
  • You’ll explore our facilities and see what your future classroom or lab might look like. With state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll get a feel for where you’ll be learning, growing and preparing for what’s next.
  • You’ll walk away with clarity. The unknowns about college—where you’ll fit in, what to expect—become familiar. That means better decisions, less stress and more excitement about starting.

What to Expect on Your Visit

When you schedule a campus visit, here’s what you can plan for:

  • Check-in at the Admissions Office: When you arrive, head to the Pierce Administration Building; that’s where our admissions team welcomes you.
  • Guided tour of campus: A student ambassador or admissions staff member will walk you through key buildings—classrooms, student life areas, labs—so you get a real feel for the environment.
  • Time to explore on your own: Walk around at your own pace. Grab a coffee, peek into student spaces, imagine your day-to-day as a Trojan.
  • Q&A about next steps: After the tour, you’ll have time to chat about admissions, financial aid, housing and how to make it all happen.

A Few Tips to Make the Most of Your Visit

  1. Write down your questions ahead of time. Want to know about internships? Transfer opportunities? Ask away!
  2. Bring someone with you. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or mentor, having someone along gives you an extra perspective.
  3. Explore beyond the tour. See the spots where students hang out, check out the housing (if you’ll live on campus), and imagine your daily routine.
  4. Take notes or pictures. After you leave, you’ll thank yourself for remembering the vibe, the things you liked, and the things you want to check further.
  5. Make the follow-up decision. Visiting helps turn potential into a plan. After you leave, reflect—does this feel like your place to build your future?

Ready to Schedule Your Visit?

Head over to the campus visit page on the 51ÁÔÆæ website to choose your visit type and find available dates. Whether you prefer an individual visit or a Saturday group visit, there’s an option for you.

Why Now’s the Right Time

Choosing the right college is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make—but visiting makes it feel real. At 51ÁÔÆæ, you’re choosing a community that cares about your success, a setting where you’ll grow, and a future you’ll build.

So take the next step. Schedule your visit. Walk the campus. Ask the questions. Start seeing your future here at 51ÁÔÆæ.

We can’t wait to welcome you to campus and show you what life at 51ÁÔÆæ could be.

Real careers. Real employers. Real possibilities. Area high school students got hands-on help realizing their future careers are totally attainable.

Industrial Simulator Day at 51ÁÔÆæ gave tomorrow’s employees the opportunity to see what today’s jobs look like. Melinda McGregor, Director of 51ÁÔÆæ’s Emerging Workforce Solutions, explains the networking that works. “We think it’s a great way for students to get hands-on opportunities to learn about these industrial careers and really to give them the opportunities to connect with employers who are in the field and learn about what is here and available in North Iowa.”

The younger workforce hopefuls can see available jobs and talk one-on-one with company representatives. Clear Lake freshman Charlie Larson took advantage of the experience. “We went to the panel and we talked to two people about what you needed for certain jobs and what they expected from you. And then we went and toured the campus to see what classes they offered.”

Connecting young people with businesses across the area takes a little work. But once it’s all organized, the event showcases the possibilities that await after graduation.

Cathy Spotts is with the Mason City Alternative High School. She appreciates the effort that goes into even the smallest details. “51ÁÔÆæ always does a great job of trying to figure out what the schools need. What is it that our students need. And they do a nice job of finding out what businesses need in the communities and then explaining, you know, that you kids are in a great position right now to just jump into a trade and make good money and with hardly any training or any experience.”

The idea of a four year college can be daunting; not just finding the right one, but affording higher education. The Industrial Simulator Day brought a sense of relief to those in attendance. Gavin Rosie, freshman, says, “I think that a lot of these stations are helpful in real life cause it shows you how to do basic things. And now there’s big things that could help you figure out your career in the future and figure out what you’re doing.”

“It surprised me that all these careers only take one or two years to finish. I think that’s really nice and interesting,” said Weston Conway, a junior at Clear Lake High School.

51ÁÔÆæ President Steve Schulz enjoys seeing the lightbulb moments for the students. “This is a great event for our local high school kids and anybody who’s interested in the trades and jobs of the future,” Schulz emphasizes. “It’s just fun to really see them light up and learn that there’s more to this than what you may have thought.”

McGregor agrees. “There are a lot of careers available here and we want students to see that they don’t have to go away to school to make a good wage. And we have employers here that are willing to work with us, work with the students, and provide these opportunities. All we have to do is make those connections happen.”

From simulators that give the students a hands-on moment with a potential career field to asking questions of panelists, the young people know that this experience is one they won’t take for granted. Jonas Hollemback is a junior at West Hancock. For him, the day confirmed what he already knew. “I’ve always been into the industry of what I want to pursue since I was little. And learning about how to become a better truck driver made me wanna go more into it.”

At the end of the day, it’s about discovering there’s an entire world of opportunity potentially right in these young peoples’ back yards..

National Apprenticeship Week celebrates “Superhighway to Good Jobs”

MASON CITY | Students getting paid to get their homework done?  That sounds like a pretty sweet deal!  Registered apprenticeships offer motivated students the opportunity better their lives. In return, employers get dedicated, experienced, highly-trained individuals to meet their staffing needs.

“Registered apprenticeships are one of the most important tools we have to grow our talent pipeline,” said Colleen Frein, President and CEO, Mason City Chamber of Commerce at the North Iowa Commerce Center on Thursday.

Area employers met to discuss experiences with Registered Apprenticeship and how it enhances job quality, elevates access to well-paying positions, and addresses workforce shortages in key sectors at the event which was held in conjunction with National Apprenticeship Week.

51ÁÔÆæ offers apprenticeship opportunities in several areas including Heating and Air Conditioner Installation and Service, Industrial Maintenance, Welding, Carpentry, Phlebotomy and Accounting according to Melinda McGregor, Director of Emerging Workforce Solutions at 51ÁÔÆæ.

51ÁÔÆæ is currently partnering with nine area employers and has 14 apprentices.

Each program varies in length from one year to four years as outlined by the Department of Labor.

Employers heard real-life experiences from three apprentices who are currently participating in these programs.

“The support we have from 51ÁÔÆæ and our employers makes it difficult to fail.”

— Jeston Umstead, 51ÁÔÆæ/Smithfield Student Apprentice

51ÁÔÆæ is committed to expanding opportunities in both credit and non-credit learning.

“The graduation rate for career/technical programs at our college is 98%,” said 51ÁÔÆæ President Dr. Steven Schulz, “When people come to 51ÁÔÆæ and they know what they want to do —they graduate.”

Apprenticeships offer hands-on learning. Students who begin the program will know the career they are pursuing before they begin.

“Our job to help people find their way, save money, get to the workforce quickly and have them build a middle-class lifestyle,” added Schulz.

For questions and/or to be connected with a 51ÁÔÆæ team member that can assist with one of the above Employer Services, contact the Director of Emerging Workforce Solutions.

Skilled Trades Spotlight Visit
March 31, 9:00 am

Register Now

Now is a great time to consider a career in the skilled trades. With the aging population of baby boomers set to retire, the shortage of workers to take their place has sent a bit of a shockwave through the country. There is a serious lack of individuals with the skills to support the American infrastructure.

But that is not the only reason the trades have suffered.

For years, it’s been pushed on high school students to attend a four-year university and obtain a bachelor’s degree. It was just the way of the world. The traditional perception was that high paying jobs were only found if you followed this path.

This is simply not true.

Skilled tradespeople often make equivalent to or more than their academic counterparts. Most trade jobs not only offer high take home pay, but great benefit and retirement packages.

Plus, workers aren’t carrying a heavy debt on their shoulders from school.

Completing a skilled trades program usually takes less time to complete; anywhere from 8 weeks to 2 years. Students get hands-on training to prepare them for the workforce. In some cases, apprenticeships are available for experience-based education.

51ÁÔÆæ has programs in Automotive Technology, Building Trades, Diesel Technology, Welding, Heating & Air Conditioning, Tool & Die Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Industrial Mechanics, and Industrial Systems.

The growing demand for trades means jobs will always be plentiful. We found during the 2020 Global Pandemic that skilled trade workers were not impacted like other jobs were. Because of this, workers can levy their skills for better wages, benefits, jobs and more stability.

Plus, the pay can be great!

Due to the high demand of these careers, the wages earned in them have always been substantial. Now, as workers continue to grow and learn in their field, they are able to gain even higher income by learning more applications and processes.

In a nutshell, pursuing a career in a skilled trade is a win/win across the board!

If you have an interest in learning about these high demand fields and how you can get in, get out, and get to work, you MUST check out the 51ÁÔÆæ Spring Spotlight Visit on March 31st. Beginning at 9:00am in the Stoltenburg Forum/Beem Center 200, this session covers everything from constructing houses, robots, learning to weld, tool and die project, to heating and cooling and advanced manufacturing concerns.

A job in the trades can provide the job security and income that was once only promised from a college degree. The trades provide essential services for which there will always be a need. Construction is constantly moving as we look to replace old buildings and infrastructure to ensure public safety.

If you love to tinker and work with your hands, be sure to attend this Spotlight Visit. It might be just what you’ve been looking for!

A Real-Life Example by Rachel Smith

It is estimated that anywhere between 20 and 50 percent of students enter college undecided.  At many institutions, students have access to a wealth of resources they can use to narrow down a major.

Once you decide, however, doesn’t always mean your life is set in stone.

Almost 75% of people who have graduated from college report having changed their major at least once.

And guess what… it’s OKAY!

Being undecided simply means you have yet to find what sparks a passion inside of you.  Students who aren’t sure of their career pathway should take time to reflect on their personality, interests, values and academic strengths.  Then, it’s always good to talk with trusted adults – parents, teachers, counselors – about how these traits could translate into a future career.

You may love to do something, but not even know how they ways it could be utilized in the workforce.

This is why if ever there was a campus visit to mark yourself as ‘going’ – this is THE ONE!  Scheduled for March 24th at 9:00AM in the Stoltenberg Forum/Beem Center 200, this session is designed for those struggling to find their place.  The ones who are unsure where they want to go or what they want to do in life.  This spotlight is a great way to connect and find where your passion lies as you identify new ideas and unexpected career paths.

Being unsure is more common that you maybe realize.

In the fall of 1999, I enrolled at 51ÁÔÆæ for my freshman year.  I started as a business major, changed to a psychology major, decided I wanted to be a college band instructor at one point, and then ended the year back in business classes.

Thankfully, I had the summer to pull myself together a bit.

Except it didn’t really work that way.  I started my sophomore year with grand plans to be a college professor myself, changed back to business mid-year, and ended my college experience at 51ÁÔÆæ with “transfer student” as my focus.

It was at that time I utilized the many resources 51ÁÔÆæ had to offer to truly find my passion in lifeMy counselor helped me find where I excelled, and where I struggled, helping me gain focus on discovering something just right.

Rachel Smith, Clear Lake, Iowa

Upon graduation, I transferred to the University of Northern Iowa where I found a passion for public relations and marketing.  I spent the next three years obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in marketing.

If you’re struggling, it’s okay.  No one expects you to have all the answers immediately.  Maybe you need to dip your toes in the water across the board of possibilities in order to find where you want to dive in.

Work with an Academic Advisor to help develop a plan.  They know the ins and outs of what is available and how to navigate your way through the classes.  It also helps to find a sense of belonging on campus.  Join a group or organization, connect with others in the dorms or throughout classes or extra-curricular activities.  The more people you meet, the more you’ll submerge yourself into the college experience.  Which, in turn, will help you find your path.

Lastly, talk to professors and advisors about the many types of careers out there.  Trust me, there are jobs you may have never even heard of before that could be the perfect fit for you.  Learn about them.  Soak up every bit of knowledge you can.  If you’re unsure what your future holds – don’t worry about it!  Many students are in the same boat.  Come to the campus spotlight.  It’s a great way to connect with 51ÁÔÆæ and take the first step on your path to success.

The business world is fast-paced and always changing.  In this digital era new advancements pop up daily.  What worked for companies 10 years ago is no longer a viable option for their operations or marketing.  Because of this, finding new ways to continue doing business, growing, and developing is crucial for success.

A business degree puts you right in the middle of this agile industry.  Our classes teach skills you will use on a daily basis – things like accounting (balancing your checkbook and handling finances), negotiation, and management skills.

You can’t go wrong with a business degree.  The field is so versatile, and the opportunities are seemingly endless.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in learning more about, be sure to attend the Spring Spotlight visit on March 10th at 9:00 AM in the Stoltenburg Forum/Beem Center 200.

In this session, you will explore the skills needed to grow your own business or develop skills required for high-demand positions.  This session is designed to help you move toward transfer or employment in accounting, management, marketing, or business administration.

Here’s a little preview of each area of interest.

is the practice of measuring, processing, and sharing financial information within a business.  If you love crunching numbers, this career area could see you keeping the books and managing the financial transactions within the company.

involves the coordination and organization of activities within a company.  Business managers often oversee operations and help employees reach their highest potential.  Their job title regularly includes training new employees and helping the company reach its overall goals.

is an exciting and dynamic career choice that continues to change at a lightening pace.  The traditional way of marketing clients has shifted dramatically from newspaper, radio, and television into the digital age.  Technology and the use of social platforms to elevate your business have catapulted us into a future where the reach is attainable on a global level.

is like an umbrella over all the business majors.   It includes many different roles, professional settings, and opportunities for growth.  People who love to work with people will enjoy human resources.  Are you competitive? Sales may be for you. Solving problems or coming up with strategies means a business analyst or consultant is a good fit for you.  And for the math whiz, there are accounting roles or data analytics.

So many choices.  So much room for growth.  The perfect career in business is waiting just for you!

Business is a great way to begin your college career.  One perk in choosing this field is the broad spectrum it covers.  Once you find where your true passion lies within the business realm, it is easy to specialize.  On top of that, there is an opportunity to apply your education and experience to another industry, utilizing what you’ve learned to help grow your business.

If you are eager to learn more about becoming a business major, this is one campus visit you do not want to miss!

You can feel the thump-thump of the music filling the gymnasium. The excitement travels through you as if you are one of the players or cheerleaders running out on the court. This. This is college. This is the community feeling when you find the right fit.

There are other ‘right fit’ aspects you need to consider too—such as location, cost and class size.
All are equally important.

What if you could go on a college visit that was incredibly fun, but also informative? What if you had the opportunity to win scholarships and prizes and really get a feel for what life would be like on campus?
If you’re looking for the ultimate college visit experience, mark your calendar for Saturday, February 18th to attend Bustin’ Out Blue at 51ÁÔÆæ.

This is one campus visit you won’t want to miss! You’ll get to cheer on the Men and Women Trojans as they take to the basketball court that day, play games, and win prizes! Your time at 51ÁÔÆæ will include a tour of campus and housing facilities, along with a first-hand look into your academic area, financial aid information, and scholarships.

While , you can also register in the 51ÁÔÆæ gym from 12:45 – 1:00 the day of the event. There, you’ll receive your FREE 51ÁÔÆæ t-shirt as well as the schedule of events for the day.

The visit kicks off at 1:00 with a short program which will include information on Admissions, Clubs, Activities, Scholarships, Financial Aid and for your interest area and major. From there, you’ll head to the gym for the Women’s basketball game and see a 51ÁÔÆæ Dance Team performance. Great prizes will be awarded to those attending Bustin’ Out Blue during halftime, and you must be present to win!

Following the game, the visit will take you over to campus housing for a tour. This tour can either be on your own, or with a 51ÁÔÆæ Student Ambassador. Either way, be sure to drop your ticket in the box at Housing because there will be even more prizes handed out later!

The 51ÁÔÆæ Trojan Men will take the court at 3:00 that afternoon. More prizes, and even a few scholarships, will be awarded at halftime, so make sure you stick around to see if you win.
Bustin’ Out Blue is open to any high school age student and their family. While all incoming athletes receive a postcard invitation to attend, this campus visit is for anyone looking to learn more about 51ÁÔÆæ and what it means to be a Trojan.

“When I arrived, I was immediately greeted by (Admissions Director) Rachel McGuire who remembered my mom and I from previous visits. That showed me that 51ÁÔÆæ and its staff are dedicated to getting to know each student as individuals which made me even more confident in my decision in attending 51ÁÔÆæ.”

Katy Olive, 51ÁÔÆæ student

While Katy knew she’d be attending 51ÁÔÆæ in the fall, Bustin’ Out Blue was another chance for her to tour the campus and get a feel for where she’d spend her next two years. In fact, Katy was so impressed she decided to become a Student Ambassador herself!

Throughout the day, two $1000 scholarships will be awarded for campus housing, and one $1000 for general tuition costs. Prizes include many coveted “college themed” items such as a Smart TV, portable speakers, headphones and 51ÁÔÆæ apparel.

Anne Boyer, Enrollment Specialist in Student Services, encourages all students to attend this event. “We personally invite all incoming signed athletes as well as all Juniors and Seniors we’ve previously been in contact with,” she said. “However, we often see sophomores and freshman attend as well. Everyone is welcome and highly encouraged to attend.”
