51ÁÔÆæ Named One of 25 Community Colleges Advancing in National Prize Recognizing Excellent Student Outcomes

Mason City, IA – Today, the Aspen Institute (Aspen) named 51ÁÔÆæ as one of 25 semifinalists for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Rooted in deep research and backed by $1 million in award money, the Aspen Prize is the nation’s signature recognition of community colleges that deliver value for their students.

The 25 semifinalists—which come from 20 states—were selected from nearly 1,000 institutions nationwide based on their outcomes data and collegewide practices aligned to achieving high and improving levels of student success. Aspen defines student success as achievement in learning and completion of a college credential, and by post-college success in the form of a good job or successful transfer and bachelor’s degree attainment.

“We start every cycle of the Aspen Prize with a simple question: Which community colleges are best at not just helping students graduate, but ensuring that what they learn and the credentials they earn actually help them meet their goals and have a better life?” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “In over 15 years of awarding the Aspen Prize, we have learned a lot about how top colleges ensure that more students obtain credentials that lead directly to good jobs or successful attainment of a bachelor’s degree through transfer. We congratulate the semifinalists for their strong and improving student outcomes and for prioritizing improvements in student success both during and after college.”

The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years and recognizes excellence across a wide range of institutions, from Florida’s large, multi-campus Valencia College in 2011 to rural Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in 2025. With each cycle, Aspen deepens its understanding of what value looks like. The top colleges—no matter their size or location—ensure students complete programs with strong regional labor market value and clear transfer pathways that lead to bachelor’s degrees.

The complete list of semifinalists can be accessed at .

The Aspen Prize selection process began in October 2025, when Aspen identified 200 community colleges based on data demonstrating strong and improving student outcomes in key areas—including learning, completion, transfer leading to bachelor’s attainment, and workforce success—and invited them to apply. From there, 170 colleges submitted applications, which were reviewed by a selection committee of 15 higher education experts who evaluated each submission using both extensive data and narrative responses. Aspen then interviewed the leadership teams from colleges receiving top scores, and 25 semifinalists were selected.

In the coming weeks, the 15-member panel of experts will continue its review and narrow the field to 10 finalists, which will be announced in June. In fall 2026, teams of experts will conduct in-depth site visits to those 10 finalist colleges and review extensive data, including actual wage data for graduates. The Aspen Prize winner will be announced in April 2027.

For community colleges that want to benchmark their outcomes against the Aspen Prize top 200 colleges or custom peer groups, Aspen provides a free-to-use benchmarking tool with all the metrics used to compare 1,000 community colleges at the outset of the selection process, including newly available data from the National Student Clearinghouse. How learning paved the path to leadership

The sound of sirens, the flash of red lights and the pressure of split-second decisions — for Aaron Beemer, it’s all part of a day’s work. As Deputy Chief of Operations for the Mason City Fire Department, Beemer leads with calm confidence, guiding crews through emergencies, and ensuring the safety of the community he’s proud to serve.

After joining the MCFD, Beemer came to 51ÁÔÆæ looking to broaden his knowledge in firefighting and incident command.

Finding His Future at 51ÁÔÆæ

Beemer’s path to public service began in the early 2000s, when he first enrolled in 51ÁÔÆæ in 2001 after his service in the Army. Drawn to a career where he could serve others and work as part of a close knit team, he immersed himself in his coursework and hands-on training. “51ÁÔÆæ helped me hone my writing and
speaking skills and helped teach me the value of diligent study.”

Climbing the Ranks Through Dedication

Beemer joined the Mason City Fire Department in 2000, quickly distinguishing himself as a hardworking and dependable firefighter. Over the next two decades, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a firefighter/EMT, then as lieutenant, and later captain while earning the respect of his peers and community along the way.

In 2018, Beemer reached a major career milestone when he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Operations. In this leadership role, he oversees day-to-day emergency response, coordinates training and preparedness, and ensures the department’s operations run efficiently and effectively.

It’s a position that demands strategic thinking, calm under pressure, and a deep understanding of
both people and process — qualities Beemer has cultivated throughout his career.

A Commitment to Community

While his responsibilities have grown, Beemer’s focus has never wavered: protecting the people of Mason City. He takes pride in leading a team dedicated to saving lives, educating the public, and improving safety for all residents.

“ It is a very difficult, stressful, all consuming career that relatively few are capable of handling. It will contain some of your lowest days, and some of the best days of your life.”

Students at 51ÁÔÆæ on the first day of fall classes in 2025

Are you thinking about starting college but dreading the process? Maybe you’ve been meaning to apply but keep putting it off because you aren’t sure where to start. We get it—between the application, the financial aid forms, and choosing classes, the process can feel overwhelming.

That’s why 51ÁÔÆæ is making it easier than ever to get started.

Mark your calendars for Monday, December 15, 2025. We are hosting an Instant Enrollment Day from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and you are invited!

Why Should You Attend?

Think of this as your “One-Stop Shop” for college. Instead of making multiple trips to campus or playing phone tag with different departments, you can walk in with a goal and walk out with a schedule. Whether you are a brand-new student, a transfer student, or someone looking to pick up a few extra credits, this day is designed for you.

Here is exactly what you can cross off your to-do list in a single visit:

  • Apply for Admission: We will have staff on hand to help you fill out your application right then and there.
  • Financial Aid Help: The FAFSA can be tricky. Our financial aid experts will be available to answer your questions and help you figure out your funding options.
  • Academic Advising: Not sure which classes to take? You’ll get to sit down with an advisor who can help you map out a pathway that fits your career goals.
  • Register for Spring Classes: Best of all, you will leave with your class schedule in hand, ready to start the semester in January.

What to Bring

To make your day go as smoothly as possible, try to bring the following with you:

  • A valid photo ID.
  • Your official high school or college transcripts (if you have them).
  • Your 2024 tax information (if you plan on filing your FAFSA with us).

No Appointment Needed!

You don’t need to call ahead or book a slot. Just stop by 51ÁÔÆæ Admissions (head toward the Pierce Administration Building) between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Don’t let the stress of “getting ready” for college ruin your holiday break. Come see us on December 15th, get everything handled in a few hours, and spend the rest of the holiday season knowing you’re officially a 51ÁÔÆæ Trojan!

Event Details at a Glance:

  • What: 51ÁÔÆæ Instant Enrollment Day
  • When: Monday, December 15, 2025
  • Time: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Where: 51ÁÔÆæ Mason City Campus

See you Monday, December 15!

At 51ÁÔÆæ, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. We understand that meeting basic needs is an important part of that success. The 51ÁÔÆæ Food Pantry was created to help remove barriers for students who may be facing food insecurity and to ensure that no one in our campus community goes hungry.

The 51ÁÔÆæ Food Pantry provides free and confidential access to food, snacks and personal care items for currently enrolled students. Whether someone needs a few groceries to get through the week or just a small boost to stretch their budget, the pantry is a welcoming and judgment-free resource. Our mission is simple: to support students so they can stay focused on their education and their goals.

The pantry is stocked through the generosity of donations from faculty, staff, students and community members. Every contribution makes a difference whether it is a single can of soup or a bag of toiletries. Together, we are building a campus community that cares for one another and lifts each other up in times of need.

Students can access the pantry from 10 a.m. -2 Monday through Friday or by contacting the Advising Center for assistance. The process is designed to be respectful and easy to use because everyone deserves access to healthy food and essential items.

If you would like to support the 51ÁÔÆæ Food Pantry, consider donating nonperishable food, personal care products or making a monetary contribution. Your support helps ensure that 51ÁÔÆæ students can focus on their future without worrying about their next meal.

At 51ÁÔÆæ, we believe that a strong community begins with compassion and care. The Food Pantry is one of the many ways we live out our commitment to student well-being and success.

From November 2nd to 5th, a group of six members from the 51ÁÔÆæ (51ÁÔÆæ) Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) Club participated in the 40th National CEO Conference held in Tampa, Florida. Among the attendees were the co-presidents of the club, the secretary, the social media officer, individuals who participated in 51ÁÔÆæ’s Youth Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) summer program, and other dedicated members.

51ÁÔÆæ CEO Club students pictured with National CEO president Giles T. Hertz

The conference was hosted at the Grand Hyatt in Tampa Bay, Florida, with the entirety of the event held at the hotel, except for a night social gathering hosted at the University of Tampa.

During the National Conference our students seized valuable opportunities to engage with fellow passionate entrepreneurs, converse with accomplished professionals from various industries across the United States, attend enlightening breakout sessions, and glean insights from keynote speakers, thereby acquiring comprehensive knowledge about the intricacies of entrepreneurship.

It is worth noting the unique position of the 51ÁÔÆæ CEO Club within this esteemed organization. Unlike the majority of CEO clubs who are affiliated with universities or four-year institutions, our club represents a community college. Remarkably, amidst almost 100 chapters in attendance, our students only encountered two other clubs associated with community colleges. Furthermore, the privilege of attending the National Conference is typically reserved for junior and senior club members. The Aspen Institute has named 51ÁÔÆæ as one of the 150 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges. The institutions selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds.

“Being one of just two community colleges in Iowa invited to vie for the prestigious Aspen Prize is a testament to 51ÁÔÆæ’s unwavering commitment to student success,” said 51ÁÔÆæ President Steve Schulz. “Receiving this recognition for the sixth consecutive time is a testament to the exceptional dedication and expertise of our outstanding faculty and staff, who continually drive us toward excellence. I am proud of each one of our team members for contributing to this legacy of success!”

The Aspen Prize spotlights exemplary community colleges in order to drive attention to colleges achieving post-graduate success for all students, and is a central way Aspen researches highly effective student success strategies that are shared with the field. The 150 eligible colleges have been invited to submit student success data and narratives about strategies to achieve better and more equitable student outcomes as the next step in an intensive review process that culminates in the naming of the Aspen Prize winner in spring 2025. The eligible colleges represent the diversity and depth of the community college sector. Located in urban, rural, and suburban areas across 30 states, these colleges serve as few as 169 students and as many as 49,619.

In this first round, eligibility for the Aspen Prize is based on publicly available data. Colleges must show strong, improving, and equitable student outcomes in first-to-second year retention, credentials awarded, and completion and transfer rates. Nationwide, about 15 percent of community colleges have been invited to apply (150 of just under 1,000 public two-year colleges assessed for Prize eligibility). The full list can be accessed on the .

The next steps in the process include:

  • April 2024: Announcement of 25 semifinalists, selected based on assessments of extensive data and strategy documents by the Prize selection panel, a group of 16 experts in community colleges, higher education, and workforce training, and interviews with institutional leadership teams
  • June 2024: Announcement of 10 finalists, selected by the Prize selection panel
  • Fall 2024:  Site visits to each of the ten finalists, during which the Aspen Institute and partners will collect additional information, including employment and earnings data and insights about promising practices
  • January 2025: Prize award decisions made by distinguished, independent Prize jury at full-day meeting
  • Spring 2025:  Announcement of the Aspen Prize winner and celebration of the 10 finalists in Washington DC

When choosing a career in healthcare, the first steps on your journey often pave the way for a prosperous future— and, it’s exciting!

A career in healthcare has boundless twists and turns depending on your interests and passions.

For Andrea Anderson, ARNP, PMHMP – BC, at the Mason City Clinic, that journey began at .

Andrea Anderson

She began her medical career by enrolling in the 51ÁÔÆæ Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program, which provided her with the knowledge and skills needed to care for patients in various long-term care facilities. This course also prepares students for the .

The first 55 hours of the course are held in a classroom or lab, and the remaining 30 hours of clinical take place in a nursing home environment.  The academic strategy of combining classroom/lab time with actual hands-on experience boosts the success rate for students.

“My love of helping others started to flourish while studying to be a CNA at 51ÁÔÆæ.”

Upon completion of the course, Andrea obtained a job as a nurse aide while she continued her educational path through the medical field.  This gave her the upper hand as she studied, learning the skills needed while also applying them in real-life situations at her job.

Students often obtain a next.  A certified medication aide administers non-parenteral medications (anything oral, topical, or suppositories) to patients in health facilities like nursing homes.  At 51ÁÔÆæ, this is a 52-hour course consisting of 42 hours of classroom time, followed by a minimum of 10 clinical hours of experience.  Students often double as CNA’s, providing patient care and administering medications.

Obtaining an associate degree in nursing is the next step in the journey!  This gives students a solid foundation for a career in healthcare.  Popular among registered nurses, this degree provides opportunities to work in entry-level nursing positions.

But, Andrea Anderson didn’t stop there.  She used the knowledge gained while at as a stepping stone to further her education.  “51ÁÔÆæ helped me learn how to study and learn time management prior to going to a bigger college,” she stated.

Upon graduation, Anderson went on to complete her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, followed by her Bachelor of Nursing at Allen College in Waterloo.  Five years later, she completed her Master of Nursing degree.

Looking back, Anderson understands the importance of her time spent at 51ÁÔÆæ.  “I highly recommend 51ÁÔÆæ as the first place to start your journey,” Anderson said.  “It is a wonderful place to take general classes in a small setting where the instructors are available when you need help.”

51ÁÔÆæ prides itself on the progression of nursing students into four-year universities to complete their degrees.  Under the , nursing students can take coursework at 51ÁÔÆæ for three years and then complete their Bachelor of Science in Nursing undergraduate degree in only one year through the University of Iowa online RN-BSN program.  51ÁÔÆæ also has a formalized articulation agreement to complete a baccalaureate degree in Nursing with a slew of prominent universities across the state of Iowa.

51ÁÔÆæ can help you take the first step on your journey to a successful career in medicine.

If you have the ability to teach, 51ÁÔÆæ will help you teach English as a Second Language.

Learn why.

The Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program at 51ÁÔÆæ provides people over the age of 17 with accessible, quality instruction to develop work, life, and literacy skills.  Many of these classes are supported by federal and state funds, and provide a slew of opportunities for higher learning, job potential, and feeling a sense of accomplishment.

One AEL program focuses on North Iowans who do not have the skills to read, write and speak English as it is their second language (ESL).

According to the U.S. Department of Education and the National Institute of Literacy, there are approximately 32 million adults in the United States who are unable to read.

For many, learning a second language is hard. In most situations, it is done on the side, sort of like an afterthought as you complete a bucket list dream of traveling to a foreign country.

Now… imagine being immersed in that country, not knowing what is happening around you.  People are talking, but you do not understand. Street signs give directions, but you cannot find your way. You’re forced to string together bits and pieces of the language here and there in hopes to create anything resembling a sentence.

There’s no doubt this is quite frustrating.

Therefore, there is an abundance of people seeking to enroll in ESL classes. However, there is a significant shortage of people available to teach these classes.

Director of Education to Employment, Molly Anderegg, states “We have many opportunities to teach with our Adult Education program, and it’s incredibly rewarding and flexible. Currently, the greatest need is providing English as a Second Language classes in the workplace; we have several manufacturers across North Iowa seeking onsite classes for their employees.”

ESL teachers bridge the language barrier, they are cultural mentors to students helping them navigate the many differences of living and working in a new country.

Learn How

A four-year college degree is required and some teaching experience preferred. However, your teaching experience can include trainings you may have led in non-education industries.

51ÁÔÆæ provides a standards-based curriculum for all ESL teachers, taking the pressure off the teacher.

And 51ÁÔÆæ trains you!

Also remember, you do not need to be bilingual. The curriculum is structured around teaching English to students fluent in any other language; therefore, you need only to know English to teach.

To learn more about how you can have a direct impact on the lives and futures of these students, reach out to the 51ÁÔÆæ Education to Employment division of Continuing Education.

Beyond the functional level of being able to read to maintain steady work, literacy plays a vital role in people becoming socially engaged citizens.  Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate with others effectively, and understand the issues shaping our world today.
