For more than 39 years, has helped communities across the Midwest operate and manage their water and wastewater facilities. The company’s work requires employees to safely navigate the unique demands and hazards of the water and wastewater industry. For more than two decades, PeopleService has partnered with 51ÁÔÆæ Continuing Education to help ensure its employees have training designed around those specific needs.

The partnership began in the late 1990s, when PeopleService was still part of People Natural Gas. At the time, its safety training was largely designed around gas operations and did not fully address the hazards water and wastewater operators encountered on the job. PeopleService turned to 51ÁÔÆæ for help creating a stronger safety program that better reflected the day-to-day work of its employees.

Together, PeopleService and 51ÁÔÆæ developed a training approach specific to the company’s operations rather than relying on an off-the-shelf program. The partnership led to the creation of a safety manual centered around OSHA-required training, with computer training also included during the program’s early years. What began with a small group of local employees has since grown into an annual training program for PeopleService’s entire operational team. Employees also earn credit hours through the training that can be applied toward their certification renewal.

Over the years, the partnership has helped PeopleService continue strengthening its approach to workplace safety. Customized training has allowed the company to address industry-specific hazards, identify the personal protective equipment employees need, and provide more complete training for its workforce. PeopleService’s commitment to safety has also earned recognition through the George W. Burke, Jr. Safety Award from the Water Environment Federation.

More than two decades later, the partnership between PeopleService and 51ÁÔÆæ continues to grow and evolve. What began with one specific training need has developed into a long-standing relationship centered around supporting employees and responding to the changing needs of the business. By working together to create training that reflects PeopleService’s workforce, industry and day-to-day operations, the partnership has helped build a safety program that continues to serve the company today. As the company has grown, so has its commitment to investing in its people. Garner-based Plas-Tech Tooling, Inc. has been named one of 10 semifinalists in the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Patriot Pitch Competition. The competition is part of the SBA’s Freedom 250 initiative, which recognizes small businesses that are creating jobs, strengthening local economies, and supporting American manufacturing.

Founded in 1993 by Dean and Marcia Sonquist, Plas-Tech Tooling has grown from a two-car garage into a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. The company specializes in precision machining, injection mold design and building, and plastic injection molding, serving customers in industries including agriculture, aerospace, defense, heavy equipment, and other industrial markets across North America.

Today, the second generation of the Sonquist family helps lead the company as it continues to invest in new technology while creating quality jobs and supporting workforce development in North Iowa.

“Plas-Tech Tooling represents the very best of Iowa entrepreneurship,” said Candi Karsjens, Executive Director of the 51ÁÔÆæ John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center. “They have taken advantage of opportunities to learn, improve, and grow while continuing to invest in their employees, their business, and our region.”

Over the years, Plas-Tech has worked with the 51ÁÔÆæ John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, the Iowa Small Business Development Center, Venture School, CIRAS, Hancock County Economic Development, and 51ÁÔÆæ workforce training programs to support its continued growth.

Plas-Tech now advances to the next round of judging for a chance to compete in the Patriot Pitch finals in Washington, D.C., this September. A total of 1,182 businesses from across the country applied for the competition, with five finalists competing for $1 million in prize funding.

When Emily Mujica walked across the stage at Mason City High School in 2007, she wasn’t entirely sure where her path would lead. Like many graduates, she decided to start her college journey close to home — and that decision set the stage for a career built on passion, purpose and the power of education.

Finding Her Path at 51ÁÔÆæ

Emily chose to attend 51ÁÔÆæ to complete her general education requirements while exploring her interests. “When I first graduated high school, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to major in,” she recalls. “51ÁÔÆæ turned out to be the perfect choice.”

Beyond the classroom, 51ÁÔÆæ gave Emily the opportunity to continue her love for running by joining the cross country and track teams. The supportive campus community also felt like home — her family had positive experiences there, and she quickly found herself thriving in the close-knit environment. “What I really loved about 51ÁÔÆæ was the intimate learning environment,” Emily says.

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

During her time at 51ÁÔÆæ (2007–2009), several instructors left a lasting impression. Keith Jaben, a familiar face from high school, helped ease her transition to college. Paul Peterson sparked a passion for writing, leading Emily to join the LOGOS team. And math instructor Chris Brandt, who had also taught her in high school, demonstrated patience and encouragement that helped Emily overcome academic challenges.

From Student to Teacher

After graduating from 51ÁÔÆæ in 2010, Emily transferred to Iowa State University, where she earned a B.S. in Child, Adult and Family Services. She began her career as a District Executive with the Boy Scouts of America but soon discovered that her true calling was in education.

She went on to earn a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa and later a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Trauma and Resilience from Concordia University.

Since 2018, Emily has been teaching kindergarten for Lincoln, Nebraska Public Schools — a role she describes as deeply fulfilling. “Teaching wasn’t my original career path, but I came to realize it was my calling,” she explains. “As someone who struggled with school due to a learning disability, I know how important it is for a child to feel confident in their learning. That’s why I became a teacher — to help students succeed and ensure they feel empowered in the classroom.”

Building Strong Foundations

For Emily, one of the greatest joys of her job is being a child’s first teacher. “It’s such a special role to welcome kids into the world of education,” she says. “I work alongside families to make sure our classroom is a safe, caring, and joyful place to be.”

Her dedication has not gone unnoticed. Emily was nominated by her administrators for the 2023 Inspire Award and named the 2024 Thank You Teacher of the Year — an honor that holds special meaning because it came from a family. “To me, the profound connection with students and families is the highest form of recognition, and it was an honor to receive the award from the Governor of Nebraska.”

Several honors and awards were also presented. 51ÁÔÆæ’S Class of 2026 represents 17 countries, 21 states, and 94 Iowa communities.

51ÁÔÆæ celebrated student leadership and alumni achievement during the 36th annual Pathways to Success event on April 22, 2026. Held at the North Iowa Community Auditorium, the event honored 56 51ÁÔÆæ students recognized for their academic success, leadership, teamwork, and positive impact on campus.

The afternoon featured a keynote address from 2026 Outstanding Alumnus Gil Anderson, a Mason City native and 1978 51ÁÔÆæ graduate whose career has included leadership roles in aerospace, technology consulting, and business development. Anderson encouraged students to stay curious, continue learning, and take advantage of new opportunities throughout their careers.

Also honored during the event were two recipients of the 2026 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Phil Johnson, a 1964 graduate of Mason City Junior College, was recognized for his lifelong contributions to education, athletics, and community leadership. He has built a successful career as a financial advisor in Mason City and has remained deeply involved in community initiatives, including efforts supporting Mason City High School athletics and alumni programs.

Tony Coloff, a 1962 graduate of Mason City Junior College, was also honored as a Distinguished Alumnus for his career in broadcasting and his longstanding support of 51ÁÔÆæ. Coloff and his wife, Sue, founded KIOW-FM in Forest City in 1978, which grew into Coloff Media, a network of fifteen radio stations serving communities across Iowa. Coloff has served on the 51ÁÔÆæ Alumni Association Advisory Board since 2004 and has been a strong advocate for 51ÁÔÆæ students and programs.

51ÁÔÆæ President Joel Pedersen has been named a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Paragon President Honoree, a national recognition celebrating college leaders who make student success a top priority. He will be honored at PTK Catalyst, the organization’s annual international convention.

The Paragon Award recognizes new presidents who quickly build a culture that values academic excellence, leadership, and meaningful student engagement. Honorees are nominated by Phi Theta Kappa student leaders, reflecting the impact they see firsthand.

At 51ÁÔÆæ, President Pedersen has shown strong support for the college’s Alpha Psi Beta Chapter through advocacy for student-led initiatives, expanded scholarship opportunities, and campus-wide recognition of academic achievement.

As a community college graduate himself, he actively encourages students to get involved in leadership programs like the All-Iowa Academic Team and other campus initiatives.

His support of student-driven efforts, including the 51ÁÔÆæ Tree Initiative, highlights his commitment to empowering students to shape their campus community.

Students and advisors share that President Pedersen is a familiar and supportive presence at events, ceremonies, and activities across campus.

Da’Yona Johnson was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and moved to Mason City with her family in 2016. Her interest in healthcare started early while attending North Technical High School, a vocational school where she spent half her day in traditional classes and the other half in a Health Sciences program. There, she began training as a Certified Nursing Assistant and discovered a lasting interest in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. When Da’Yona decided to continue her education at 51ÁÔÆæ, she found a learning environment that helped her build on that foundation and take her first real step into a healthcare career.

Da’Yona earned her Nurse Aide Certificate from 51ÁÔÆæ in November 2020, an achievement that marked the beginning of her nursing journey. “51ÁÔÆæ gave me a fresh start,” she said. “The class sizes were smaller, the instructors were approachable, and I had constant access to labs and resources.” Her success in the Nurse Aide program inspired her to keep going, earning her Associate in Arts in Pre-ADN Studies, Associate in Science in Pre-BSN Studies, and a certificate in Coaching in 2021. In December 2024, she reached her goal of graduating with her Associate in Applied Science, Associate Degree in Nursing.

Today, Da’Yona works the night shift at MercyOne North Iowa on the medical-surgical unit. She enjoys the challenges that come with caring for patients in a fast-paced environment. “Each day I come into work, I continue to learn and problem-solve,” she said. “Being able to advocate for my patients and see them improve is what keeps me going.” Like many new nurses, Da’Yona has faced moments of self-doubt. “Imposter syndrome was a real challenge at first,” she shared. “Adjusting from student to provider can be overwhelming, but leaning on mentors, supervisors, and coworkers helped me find my footing.”

Da’Yona credits 51ÁÔÆæ’s nursing faculty, many of whom are graduates of the same program, with preparing her for the realities of the job. “They understand the challenges firsthand and bring real-world experience to the classroom,” she said. Her advice to others considering healthcare: “Don’t be afraid to try something new – whether you’re just out of high school or changing careers. Healthcare offers so many paths to explore. Stay determined, stay curious, and keep learning. The journey can be hard, but you’re capable of doing hard things.”

When Bailey Martin graduated from 51ÁÔÆæ with her Associate’s Degree in Nursing in 2024, she knew she was stepping into a career defined by compassion, resilience and continuous learning.

Today, as a Registered Nurse at Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) in Charles City, Iowa, Martin is living that reality—making a difference every day on both the Medical- Surgical Unit and in the Emergency
Department.

A Career Built on Choice and Community

Martin’s path to nursing began long before graduation day. A Mason City native, she started taking 51ÁÔÆæ classes in high school—both in-person and online—drawn by the college’s flexibility, welcoming environment and generous scholarship opportunities, including the Last Dollar Scholarship.

“The nursing program at any college can be intimidating and overwhelming,” Martin said. One lesson that stuck with her came during the notoriously difficult third semester of nursing school, when coursework focuses on cardiac and psychiatric care. “Mrs. Seibert reminded us often that we had choices, we could either choose to utilize the materials provided and utilize our time to study hard for success on the exams and in the clinical setting, or we could choose to do other things that may result in a poor grade or poor performance.”

From Behavioral Health to Emergency Medicine

After earning her degree, Martin accepted her first nursing position at Avera Behavioral Health Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There, she worked with patients facing a range of psychiatric diagnoses—a challenging and rewarding start to her career.

Eventually, the pull of home brought her back to North Iowa, where she accepted a position at FCMC. The hospital has supported her professional growth by sponsoring her Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Trauma Nursing Core Course certifications—crucial qualifications for
emergency nursing.

“FCMC has so many opportunities for career growth,” Martin said. “Many of our staff are cross-trained to work in multiple departments, including the Medical-Surgical Unit, Emergency Department and Birthing Center.”

Finding Purpose in Rural Care

Working in a critical access hospital has given Martin the chance to serve patients across the lifespan and for a variety of reasons—from emergencies to routine care.

“Providing care to members of the community at FCMC has been a rewarding experience,” she said. “I enjoy building rapport with my patients and their families to make their experience at the hospital the best it can be.”

That sense of community extends to her colleagues as well. “We work very well together and are always willing to help each other,” Martin added. “I’m never afraid to ask a question or seek support.”

Her advice to current and future nursing students is simple: “Never stop asking questions and never stop learning. We can always learn something from someone.”

Looking Ahead

Balancing a demanding weekend night shift schedule with time for family and ongoing education, Bailey Martin exemplifies what it means to be a lifelong learner and dedicated caregiver.

How 51ÁÔÆæ Shaped Energy Leader Zak Joundi

When Zakaria “Zak” Joundi ’03 left Morocco for Mason City, Iowa, he was just 17 years old, speaking four languages but still learning English. What he found at 51ÁÔÆæ was more than an education – it was a foundation that propelled him to the top of the energy industry.

A New Beginning in Iowa

Zak arrived at 51ÁÔÆæ in August 2001, only weeks before the events of 9/11. As a Muslim teenager far from home, he might have expected uncertainty. Instead, he found compassion.

“Churches and synagogues reached out to the small Muslim community. The support was incredible. The people are my favorite part of 51ÁÔÆæ.”

That spirit of care extended to campus. His first work-study job, under the guidance of Sally Becker, taught him not just responsibility but empathy. “Sally was, and still is, like family. That first job meant everything.”

The Road to Leadership

Zak earned his Associate Degree in Pre-Engineering at 51ÁÔÆæ, then transferred to Iowa State, graduating in 2005 with a degree in electrical engineering. He later completed an MBA in Finance at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

That academic foundation fueled his rise in the energy industry. Zak built his career at MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator), the nonprofit that manages the electric grid and market operations for 45 million people across 15 states and parts of Canada.

Today, as Executive Director of Market Grid Strategy, Zak leads the Market Design function, shaping how energy is delivered now and into the future. His work involves high-level collaboration with industry experts, commissioners, and stakeholders to ensure reliable, affordable, and forward-looking energy systems.

A Leader with Impact

Zak is widely respected for his ability to balance technical expertise with people-first leadership. He’s not driven by titles or money – his focus is on the success of his team and the broader mission of building a reliable energy future.

His leadership touches millions of lives, including those right here in Iowa, where energy reliability and economic growth depend on the systems his team helps design.

Staying Grounded

Despite his success, Zak remains humble – and grateful. He credits 51ÁÔÆæ for giving him confidence, support, and a sense of belonging at a pivotal time.

“People here have good values and genuine curiosity. That amazed me – and made me want to stay.”
